Mermaids on rocks above the waterline, a whole city of them in shell-shaped towers under the mer, and the Andersen tale they all come from. The scales along the tail are drawn individually, which makes them the obvious place to try a colour that shifts gradually down its length — the one trick that turns a flat drawing into something that looks considered.
